Ganz’s character wants to write about the war, himself as the great Hemingway during the Spanish Civil War. He realizes that, in Spain, sides were easy to pick and the conflict’s issues were clear cut. Not so in Lebanon. He feels he must join the war to write about it, but finds himself unable to do so.
